The International Call launched by the Municipality of Milan for the design of the Scialoia school complex in Milan aims to create a new school complex, which includes a nursery, primary and secondary school, which does not perform only the didactic function but which can become a place of reference, meeting and aggregation for the whole neighborhood.

The comb structure was designed to contain a “plug” with secondary functions that also provides protection from the traffic noise of the adjacent road. On the opposite side the spaces for teaching have been inserted. The entrance to the green, organized in bands, responds optimally to functional and compositional needs, creating a coherent and unitary intervention. The desire to create a car free school complex has prompted us to favor slow mobility by strengthening the cycle and pedestrian network. This mobility will directly connect the main entrances of the different schools: on the one hand by crossing the pedestrian square between kindergarten and kindergarten, on the other by reaching the common access in front of the extra-curricular spaces.

The internal functionality is based on the needs of modern teaching: large and articulated external spaces will be perceived by students as outdoor classrooms and the internal spaces characterized by flexible structures will allow teachers to organize lessons in groups, stimulating the propensity for social inclusion.
