HIGH SCHOOL IN ANDRIA, PROJECT IDEA FOR A SCHOOL SURROUNDED BY GREENERY

April 14, 2023

In November 2022, we participated in a competition to project a new high school in Andria, Apulia.

The design idea stemmed from observation of the territory and the desire to evoke the slopes of the Murge, covered with olive trees. The new school, therefore, fits into the existing vegetation and into the free spaces between the olive trees, creating a synergy between nature and construction.

The aim was to create a building in which the learning spaces were directly connected to greenery. With this in mind, the entrance area, the Olive Tree Garden, takes on the connotation of an urban square with the school building and Auditorium as a backdrop, and becomes a place for meeting and socialising. Through the entrance courtyard, a green space enclosed between the wings of the building that represents the school’s outdoor reception area, the indoor hall can be accessed.

Access to the building is characterised by a gradual path from outside to inside, from public to private spaces. The concept of opening the school to the community through an implicit pedagogy is of crucial importance in the educational project which then becomes an architectural project.
