The project for the extension of the Parliament of Lower Saxony wants, except of the intention to create a representative building, also to redefine the urban structure of an important part of the city, mediating the relationship between the historic city and the park along the canal that skirts the city center.
Along Leinstrasse, the building is straight and compact, while on the opposite side it´s marked by the great inclined volume of the plenary hall, which enters in relationship with the landscape by a large glass wall. The aim, to create a “transparent” atmosphere, where pedestrians can see throughout the “showcase” inside the parliament, sustains architecturally the idea of an “democratic” political system, that is not based on the hermetical isolation of power.
